The idea behind the Specific Aims is to summarize in 1-1.5 pages the central ideas behind the grant proposal. Its importance relies on two main factors. First, for many reviewers it is probably one of the only sections they will read from start to finish. Second, it drives the content of all the remaining sections of the grant proposal. In an analogy with a research question, the Specific Aims is the Question Diagram of a grant proposal.
