SOP for installing VMware and Ubuntu

Standard Operating Procedure for Installing VMware Server on Windows and Installing Ubuntu on VMware


To install VMware Server:

1. Before downloading, Register here for free serial number(s).

2. Download VMware Server for Windows from here.

3. Download the 1.0.7 version.

4. Install VMware. It will prompt for the serial number obtained earlier.

5. After installing, a desktop icon named "VMware Server Console" should appear.

6. Launch the application.

7. Select "Local host" in the first window.

8. Click on "New Virtual Machine" icon.

9. Follow the wizard to create the new virtual machine for Ubuntu.

a. For Network Type > Network Connection, select "Use bridged networking".

b. For Disk capactiy, keep it as 8GB or use 4GB depending on the space on your computer.

10. Click on "Finish" to close the wizard and create the virtual machine. This may take a few minutes.


To install Ubuntu on VMware:

1. Download Ubuntu iso image from here by selecting the appropriate option for the release, type of computer and nearest location.

2. After download completes, there are two options of installing Ubuntu:

a. Click on "Edit virtual machine setting". Select "CD-ROM" and select the "Use ISO image" option. Then browse your computer and select the iso file that you downloaded. When you click on "Start this virtual machine", it will use that iso image to install Ubuntu.

b. Burn the iso image on CD.

Note: Burning an iso image on a CD is different from burning a regular file. You may either use the "Burn Image to disk" option, if burning using Nero. Or take a look here for other options.

3. In VMware, you will see a new tab next to home named "Ubuntu".

4. Click on "Edit virtual machine settings".

5. For the "CD ROM" settings, select "Use physical drive", "Host" and "Auto Detect" options.

6. Click on OK.

7. Insert the CD into the drive.

8. Click on "Start this virtual machine".

9. The virtual machine will boot from the live CD and options for installing Ubuntu will appear. Click on "Install Ubuntu".

10. Follow the wizard to install Ubuntu.
