- Providing a pre drafted letter of support expediates its receipt from the collaborator
- The letter of support rather than being a formality should indicate the that the provider is wellversed with the project, will be benefited by it or will provide assistance and support for the successful completion of the project. So the letter should provide the reviewers with a picture of potential beneficiaries and supporters of the project
Sections
Statement of support
This section should state that the person writing the letter enthusiastically supports the project
Project goal
In this section the person writing the letter should demonstrate full knowledge of the main goals of the project, including its specific aims
Tangible commitment
In this section the person writing the grant should state which tangible actions he/she will provide in support of the grant. Tangible support could be space, funding, working hours, staff, or any other resource that clearly demonstrates that the support is not only something abstract. Simply stating that support will be provided is not enough
Required elements
Letters of support should ideally be solicited from
- Consultants - who are going to provide technical expertise for a small portion of the project. This will provide proof to the reviewers that the relevant tasks will be accomplished.
- For NIH grants its necessary to mention the manhours and corresponding compensation (per manhour and total consultation amount) in the letter of support
- Senior faculty
A letter of support from senior faculty serves as a validation from experienced esearchers thus impressing upon the reviewer that the project is acceptable and appreciated by peers of the PI
- Supporters
A letter of support from potential users or beneficiaries clarifies and affirms the presence of a target audience for the project.
SOP's
- Transfer template to the google document
- Read grant proposal in detail
- Add content to various sub sections of the letter of support template based on the relevant details in the grant proposal
- Send the document to the Co-Investigator/Consultant/Collaborator. They can review and make changes if required
- Request the delivery of signed document (Soft copy - email, hard copy - Fedex/post)
- Double check the document on receipt
- A letter of support from potential users or beneficiaries clarifies and affirms the presence of a target audience for the project.
