Designing study in DADOS Survey

  • Questionnaire must accurately measure the thoughts, feelings or behaviours in which you are interested. It should be based on the Question Diagram (QD).
  • Results should apply to a certain, specific group. So the survey questionnaire should depend upon the type of population amongst whom the survey will be conducted.
  • Before conducting a survey you need to plan the survey by answering following questions
    • What questions you are going to ask? This will depend upon the hypothesis
    • Why you are going to ask those questions? For eg. Is the survey being conducted to validate scale, or is being conducted to study people's behaviour, etc.
    • To whom you are going to ask those questions? Survey population
    • How you are going to ask those questions? This implies mode of conducting a survey, whether is it web based survey, or an paper based survey, etc. So designing of the survey questionnaire will depend upon the mode of survey.
    • How you are going to analyse the answers to those questions? This question needs to be kept in mind because it will help us to design the questionnaire depending upon our type of analysis. So for eg. a certain question needs only one answer while in the survey questionnaire we have given the option of multiple answers then this can land up in wrong analysis.
  • Design a survey questionnaire with appropriate datatype for each question. Survey research may be flawed because the questionnaire measure has poor construct validity. For eg. suppose that if a specific question needs multiple alternatives and instead of that we provide a text field, then there is a chance that the response which we get from the participants will not help us in answering our research question.
  • For a multiple choice question or only one alternative type of question please ensure that a value is assigned for each alternative.
  • While framing questions use simple words and avoid jargon.
  • Try to make the question as short as possible to avoid cognitive burden.
  • If you are copying a question from any form make sure to clear the earlier formatting so that there is no issues when the question is entered in DADOS Survey. This can be done by copying the question and pasting it in a word document and then clearing all the formatting. After you paste the content in word select it and in the Menubar click on Edit and select clear formating (Edit -> Clear -> Formats). For eg. additional space on the top of the question, font type and size, etc...
  • Before actual implementation of a final survey please make sure to run a test survey within the group.
  • Extract the data to check whether the responses are correct.
  • Make sure to delete the list of participants which were mentioned earlier to test the survey before you conduct a final survey.
